Origins by Tennis

If I told you that Dia Frampton is singing the vocals on this one, you might believe me. However, while the vocals are ‘close’ they are definitely different. But with that thought, the first time I heard it I had to look Tennis up to see who they were – initially I thought of Dia. Tennis is an Indie Pop duo consisting of a husband/wife combination out of Denver, Colorado. They’re currently touring over in the UK and will be in Europe through the middle of June (returning to play in Boulder, CO on June 16). Origins is by far my favorite of their tracks, perfect for today’s Recovery Sunday. I would also recommend checking out their retro website, you’ll get what I mean when you arrive!

Imogen Heap – Hide & Seek (Mt. Eden)

0

Mt. Eden (formerly known as Mt. Eden Dubstep) a DJ duo from New Zealand have been releasing their style of dubstep music to the world since 2010 via their YouTube channel. Now they can be found on their official website as well as SoundCloud. Some of their best work (in my humble opinion) has been their remixes of Imogen Heap. I first discovered them through the Hide And Seek remix, but have recently discovered the Let Go remix. Let Go by Imogen Heap made popular from the soundtrack of “Garden State” with Natalie Portman of course.

Take Me Home Tonight- Theo Martins

0

Here’s another great throwback track. Listening to this song makes me ready for the weekend and friends. Theo Martin samples the classic song take me home tonight, while adding his own spin to it with rap lyrics. The instrumental for the song was kicked up a notch, making it worthy for parties, workouts, or addictive listening! What I love about the track is that the original chorus of take me home tonight by Eddie Money is kept in the song. Therefore, no matter if you have heard the Theo Martin remix or not, you will be singing along to the chorus. This truly is a modern version of the song but still maintains the feel of the classic which is very hard to do, so props to Theo Martins!

Home- Edward Sharpe (Whole-Z remix)

Hey everyone! Hope you are all having a great friday! Today I’m bringing you a throwback indeed, everyone’s favorite song Home by Edward Sharpe. However, this is the Whole-Z remix, which has more bump to it. So no matter how many times you heard the original, I guarantee that you find this one different and enjoy it. My favorite part is at 1:05, when the song takes a bass drop and I just can’t sit still. Just finishing classes today, this song sums up how I feel perfectly! Crank up you volume and enjoy!

Spaceman Battle (Mb vs. The Pariah House)

3

It’s been a while since we last featured Mert “Mb” Baser on The Music Phoenix. It was fun and it generated a lot of talk because we challenged you to pick between his song and Beduelled’s bootleg of Resurrection. You know what, I think we’ll do something like this again because I found another House bootleg similar to Mb’s latest release. Starting with Mb’s track (skip the first 15 seconds – you can DL the song without the gap), it builds up with a little Martin Solveig – Ready 2 Go - with Hardwell’s Spaceman House beat flowing smoothly underneath it. The beat drops back a little to allow Gotye to come in with his Somebody That I Used To Know lyrics. Of course Hardwell is still noticeable making this a well produced mashup that lasts for just over 8 minutes.

Let that one process a little before you check out the challenger – The Pariah House. They use the same Hardwell song and surprisingly the same Gotye song as Mb. Now, the big difference is that instead of Martin Solveig, they decided to go with The Wanted. I like this move in the song, starting off strong with Glad You Came adds a little extra excitement to Hardwell.

To me, both songs could have utilized Gotye a little more effectively. Since they both used him, both bootlegs seem to end the same to me. So I think this one comes down to the start, who started the bootleg stronger? Let us know in the comments below!

Ludacris – Georgia (heRobust remix)

Here’s a great new dubstep trick that tricks you a few times in the intro. It’s so subtle that you think, ‘oh, it’s just Ray Charles singing about Georgia.’ Then Ludacris comes in to add some hip hop flavor for a brief moment only to have the orchestra come in to play a little solo. Still no clue what’s right around the corner, it’s dubstep; dubstep is waiting in the dark alley, ready to strike at a moment’s notice. Ludacris and dubstep fit together so well (I’ll save you from the attempt at a cliche analogy), but heRobust definitely busted this track with his remix.

Ima Read- Zebra Katz

1

Well JMatt, I see your WTF video and raise you. I’m talking about none other that Zebra Katz’s Ima Read. The video itself is well, strange, creepy and well generally makes you just say WTF. It reminds me of the shining with the two girls in a creepy hallway. The song itself is about college and education which I guess is good, right? Regardless, Ima Read will be stuck in your head for days or weeks. I apologize…

Boogie Pimps – Somebody To Love

I’m thrilled to have found another video to add to our WTF!?! collection. Here is the music video to the Boogie Pimps’ Somebody to Love. Overall, an easy story line to follow and yet, I want to see these skydivers hit their mark all the way until the end. You start off by thinking, ‘awww… look at the cute babies in the plane’. Then you realize what they’re jumping for, and what a large target it is. Panic sets in on one of the babies as his chute refuses to open, but when his friends make it down you realize he’s okay. I’ve always wondered if Paul Bunyan had a wife, I think he did, she is in this video. They had 7 tiny children together.

Indeed I’m Glad You Came – R i K

Our DJs have been hard at work creating mashups for their fans. Luckily for us, they are a fan of The Music Phoenix and as a result, many of you are exposed to their latest and greatest work regularly. Our international Resident DJ, RiK, has a brand new mashup of The Wanted with Fafaq to create Indeed I’m Glad You Came - an entrancing House song perfect for the club. DJ Kontrol is also out with his new project called “Trap Pop”. Our favorite new mashup of his is entitled Sexy & I Forgot About It which mashes LMFAO (of course) with Dr. Dre and Eminem. Never thought that these guys would get pitted against each other in a song, it’s slow and filled with a ton of badassery. Finally, we have our writer and break-out DJ, KosherKittens, who released Nā Palm is Your Boyfriend by popular request. I have no problem with Nā Palm, but Justin Bieber? Seriously? It’s a sad day when people want Bieber in Mashups, maybe that’s just me – I encourage the girls that love this one to chime in and defend this travesty against mankind. Again, luckily for us Nā Palm is in this one to add an extra dose of ‘man’ to the mashup.

The Knocks – Learn To Fly

I recently got turned on to The Knocks and they are quite the powerhouse. With the mission to reclaim good music for all, Ben “B-Roc” Ruttner and James “Jpatt” Patterson, have teamed up and created their own studio “HeavyRoc Music“. Learn To Fly is a magically relaxing track, perfect for our Recovery Sunday; it’s pop meets electro and it works beautifully. ‘There’s nothing I’d rather do, it’s true…’ These two are right where they need to be, creating music! R.O.Y.L. (Rest of Your Life) is another great track that they released about 5 months ago, you can hear a little Funk and Soul come through on this one. The Knocks is a duo that I plan to follow more closely and I look forward to their next release.
